We have been studying the Ebola virus and have learnt how it spreads, what symptoms it exhibits, who is it effecting and what an 'outbreak' means. We have a connection to this virus because recently a Gore women called 'Bronni McBain' arrived home from helping medically in Sierre Leonne.
We have also learnt about a less serious virus called 'The common cold'. We wrote explanations about this virus and presented this information as a brochure. The idea is to disperse these brochures around so that other people can learn more about cold virus and how to prevent it as we come into cooler weather.
With the help of Anna Napier (Mackenzie's mum) we were able to undertake a terrific science experiment in Room 8. This experiment showed us how easily it is to contract bacteria from our environment. Bacteria is everywhere and this is how viruses can be transmitted around.
Anna provided all of Room 8 with an agar petri dish each. Each student put the palm of their hand onto the agar jelly in the petri dish, after following a set of instructions (i.e. nil hand washing, hand washing quickly, hand washing thoroughly, and hand washing and drying thoroughly). In groups the students recorded a chart as to who used each particular hand washing method.
Predictions were made... and the petri dishes were put away in the hot water cupboard.
